Jumper Review

Jumper stars Hayden Christiansen and Jamie Bell as jumpers, people who have the ability to teleport to wherever they please. Initially the movie begins with the background of Hayden’s character, David. As a young boy, his mother left him at the age of five, and had to deal with his father on an aggravated basis. When he becomes slightly older, he attempts to woo a young girl by the name of Millie, the older version played by the beautiful Rachel Bilson. The local bully sees David handing Millie a snow globe and throws it onto the ice in the middle of winter. David bent to finish what he started walks out to the middle of the ice, successfully retrieves the globe, only to take two steps and be immediately plunged into the ice, where his first jump takes place. After realizing he has the power (insert Arnold Schwarzenegger joke here), David begins jumping into the bank and begins to build a life for himself, away from his father.

Then as luck would have it, a secret war has been going on for centuries between jumpers and a group of people bent on erasing them called Paladins. One of those paladins named Roland (played by Samuel L. Jackson) shows up at David’s lavish apartment one evening and begins to thoroughly punish David for having such powers, which by the way, eerily piggy-back off of the famous Nightcrawler from Marvel Comics and moreover recently made an appearance in X-Men 2. And what’s even more interesting is the weapon the paladins use, somewhat looking like the lightsaber of darth maul, but shoot out a harpoon that electrifies you and renders a jumper’s abilities useless. Perhaps Samuel L. Jackson was still reminiscing about Star Wars.

Once David escapes from the hands of Roland, he ventures around different parts of the world, where he meets Griffin, a fellow jumper. Griffin is thee best part, and character of the movie, sadly to say. Hayden Christiansen is completely flat in this movie, I did not feel any compassion from his character at all, and what’s worse is that half the time I confuse him with James Franco, and Franco is a much better actor, and probably would have been more suited for the movie then Christiansen. Without Jamie Bell, the movie would have been a complete flop, even with the strong support of Samuel L. Jackson playing the lead Paladin. Bell also has the best visual effects in this movies as well.

The visuals were really interesting. They could jump in and out of traffic, even appear in the sky at one point. Bell even drags a commuter bus from England to the desert to try and stop Roland. The cool gadget of the movie was the device that could keep the jumpers worm hole open, and then jump to that location, to further pursue the jumper.

Overall, I had a lot of fun, and the concept isn’t new but this movie made me talk about it moreover with friends afterwards. I felt the movie grow on me after I saw it. They could have toned Hayden Christiansen’s acting a little and I think the movie could have been perfect but other than that don’t expect this to be a breakthough for 2008. I think we have some definitive movies on the way.

Cloverfield Review

Stars
Michael Stahl-David, Lizzy Caplan, T.J. Miller
Directed by Matt Reeves
So you’re having a lovely going away party and then all of a sudden a monster crashes your party. Who hasn’t that happened to? Except this happens to Rob Hawkins (Stahl-David). A vice president of a company having a going away to Japan party until a lovely young monster decides to chuck the statue of liberty’s head down the street for shits and giggles. Then mass panic ensues. Only this story is told in a very unique way. A single video camera held by the very humorous Hud Platt, the man in charge of video taping goodbyes (Miller) from everyone at the party. I thought I would hate this type of camera shot. But it actually worked out excellent. The beginning is somewhat annoying with the camera work but as soon as the monster hit the style and action of the film went up ten fold. Cloverfield is definitely a seat jumper. And the CGI is absolutely amazing. The subway scene with the little offspring just made twitch a tad, simply because the little buggers were hungry, and I had no appetite for them. And the relationship between Marlena (Caplan) and Hud evolves somewhat because he turns from the jerk-off hitting on her at the party to someone who is trying to keep her alive. Something very interesting. All the while Rob is trying to rescue Beth, a woman who he likes but left her on bad terms at the party. The monster in the mean time is ripping Manhattan to shreds and the military is busy playing fetch with it and the minions that sound like Flipper that spawn off of it. And the ending was perfect. I won’t spoil it but it wasn’t your typical ending that’s for sure. I liked how raw this movie was, like it didn’t kid around with you, it meant business. You were in the building when things were blowing up, you saw those critters in the dark and they’re fricken hungry and you almost wanted to run. This movie was also very short, but I liked it. I wish they would’ve shown a little more of the giant monster perusing New York looking for a good meal but I understand since they were shooting in that specific way. So overall I think this was a great experimentation with CGI and going Blair-witch style camera shooting. I hope however, that this trend doesn’t spawn off some eight other billion crappy rip-off movies that decide to come out just because someone liked the camera work. Final Verdict: Fantastic, raw, and personal.

I Am Legend Review

Stars

Will Smith

I Am Legend stars Will Smith as Robert Neville, a virologist living in New York City trying to cure the virus derived from a cure for cancer in 2009. He is the only person in New York City with the immunity to the virus, both airborne and caused by touch. Every day he goes out to hunt and look for any signs of humanity.

First things first, this was one of thee most frustrating movies I have seen all year long. I want to like it, I really do. Ok so the first hour or so is thee most boring hour in film I have ever seen thus far. What really made me mad was the lack of a score to compliment the film. Every now and then there was a small hint of a piano playing but the movie was almost a complete silence. It’s just him doing everyday things in New York City. Going to the store to take a DVD, hunt deer, and most importantly be back by sunset before the animals come out to play. He has no interaction with anything except his dog, named Samantha. And he also talks to the store mannequins, which I don’t have a problem because you have to realize that when you spend three years by yourself with no contact you tend to go a little wacky yourself. He holds conversations with his dog as well.

And then one day out of the blue his dog goes to chase after something and runs into a building with Smith in toe. And this is one of the huge things that just absolutely made me mad, they took entire scenes to show him, pointing a flashlight in 8 different directions. Too many of the scenes were drawn out. I understand that they were emphasizing how alone Smith really was but there was nothing to compliment that and I sort of felt cheated by that. Then after the first hour and ten minutes Smith finally encounters a human being. That’s when the thing finally starts to get interesting. She was passing through and heard Smith’s calls on the radio frequency and stopped to help him when Smith decides to take on a crap load of sub-humanoid beings and basically gets his ass kicked (basically people who have gone through de-evolution and lost all forms of human sense such as compassion, speech, instinct. It’s all disappeared, and they try feeding on Smith.)

And the scenes that show New York city prior to the spread of the infection and Will Smith evacuating his wife and child out of NYC were actually interesting and powerful. They should have shown more scenes prior to 2012, like a look through over the years.

I did however feel an immediate pick up in the movie when Smith started encountering those sub-humanoid beings. The action actually woke me up instantly. I was like holy crap! The scenes started to pick right up and then BAM! Back to slow and steady lose the race. Then the action would jump in and out and I really wish it wouldn’t have done that. But it didn’t do a half bad job in the second half of the film. And the ending was actually pretty good. I actually enjoyed the last half of the movie. But it was just that first hour that was so debilitating and so gut wrenchingly boring that I’m actually glad I only payed four dollars to see this movie, otherwise I may have likely been inclined to throw a chair through the projector.

Final Verdict: Will Smith does deliver, he does, he shows what a character has gone through mass chaos and how he handles himself over the years. But the movie itself has nothing to compliment it like a strong score at all. And too many scenes are drawn out. But the last half of the movie made up for it. I Am Legend gets a gut wrenching 3.5/5.
